Sansevieria Zeylanica - Care Advice

If you’re looking for a plant that quietly gets on with things, Sansevieria zeylanica is exactly that. Often mistaken for its more famous cousin, it has softer, more natural striping and a slightly looser growth habit that feels a little less rigid. It’s one of those plants that works anywhere, modern, traditional, bright spaces or darker corners and it asks for very little in return. Slow-growing but incredibly resilient, this is a plant that suits beginners, busy homes, or anyone who just wants something reliably green without the fuss.

Light

It will grow happily around 1–2 metres from a South- or West-facing window, but it can also tolerate lower light spots further back in a room. Growth will be slower in lower light, but it will remain healthy as it's super tolerant. Avoid placing it directly against very bright glass where the leaves could scorch.

Water

Allow the soil to dry out fully between waterings, this could be as long as a month. The best way to check is by lifting the pot, if it feels very light, it’s ready for a drink. If there’s still weight to it, leave it longer. In winter, watering will be much less frequent.

Soil

A free-draining mix is essential. Our chunky houseplant soil works well, but you can improve drainage further by mixing in extra grit or perlite. The key is to avoid the roots sitting in moisture for long periods.

Temperature

General household temperatures are perfect. It will be happy anywhere between 15–25°C and prefers to be kept away from cold draughts or very chilly windowsills in winter.

Feeding

Feed lightly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks. There’s no need to feed in autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.

Toxicity: Toxic if ingested by pets or humans
