Polyscias Fabian - Care Advice
Share

The Polyscias Fabian, also known as the Dinner Plate Aralia, is a houseplant with character. With its sturdy trunk and rounded, deep green leaves edged with a hint of purple, this sculptural beauty brings a touch of tropical forest to your home. Native to the Pacific Islands, it has a naturally upright habit and grows into a miniature tree over time, making it ideal for adding height and structure to your plant collection.
Slow-growing and easy to care for, the Polyscias thrives on neglect and adapts well to indoor conditions—just give it a bright spot and let it settle in.
Light:
Polyscias Fabian prefers a bright spot with indirect light — near an East or West-facing window is ideal. It can handle a little gentle morning or late afternoon sun but avoid harsh midday rays that might scorch its leaves. Too little light will slow growth and may make the leaves less vibrant.
Water:
Polyscias Fabian likes to dry out a bit between waterings and prefers being on the drier side rather than too wet. Let the top half of the soil dry out before watering again — it’s better to underwater than overwater. If the leaves start to droop slightly, that’s your cue to give it a good soak. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows down.
Soil:
Use a chunky, well-draining houseplant mix to keep roots happy and prevent waterlogging.
Temperature:
Happy in typical household temperatures between 18–24°C. Keep it away from cold drafts and heaters.
Feeding:
Feed once a month in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. No feeding needed in winter.
A few last notes:
Polyscias Fabian is toxic to pets, so it’s best kept out of reach of curious cats and dogs. While it looks inviting, nibbling on its leaves can cause mild digestive upset. If you have furry friends, this is definitely one to place somewhere safe.
Over time, it grows a lovely woody trunk with a lush, tropical canopy — perfect for bringing architectural charm and a cosy, green vibe to your space. You can prune it back in spring to keep it compact and tidy.
