Anthurium Clarinervium - Care Advice

Anthurium clarinervium, often called the Velvet Cardboard Anthurium, is a striking foliage plant known for its thick, velvety leaves and bold white veining. Each leaf emerges heart-shaped and gradually grows larger, creating a sculptural, statement look over time. Slower growing but incredibly rewarding, it’s a great choice if you’re looking for something a little more special.

Light

Place your Anthurium clarinervium near an East or West facing window. It can tolerate a little gentle morning or late afternoon sun, but avoid strong direct sunlight as this can scorch the velvety leaves. Too little light will slow growth and reduce leaf size.

Water

Allow the top third of the soil to dry out before watering. Check the weight of the pot, when it feels noticeably lighter, water thoroughly and let any excess drain away. This plant prefers a consistent routine but doesn’t like sitting in wet soil, so avoid overwatering.

Soil

Use a well-draining, chunky houseplant mix. This helps keep air around the roots and prevents water from sitting too heavily in the pot.

Temperature

Happy in normal household temperatures, ideally between 18–24°C. Keep it away from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.

Feeding

Feed once a month in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser to support steady growth. No feeding is needed during autumn and winter.
