Alocasia Frydek (Variegated) - Care Advice

Alocasia frydek is a real showstopper! The variegated form is particularly sought after, with each leaf developing its own unique pattern of cream and green. It is a slower growing plant that can be a little dramatic when its conditions change, but when it’s happy, those beautiful leaves make it well worth the extra care.

Light:

Alocasia Frydek Variegated loves bright, indirect light. A spot close to an East or West-facing window is ideal, although it can tolerate some gentle morning or late afternoon sun. Avoid strong midday sunlight, which can scorch those beautiful leaves. Good light is particularly important for variegated plants and helps support healthy growth and maintain their colouring.

Water:

Keep the compost lightly moist while your plant is actively growing, but never leave it sitting in water. Let the top few centimetres of compost dry before watering again, then water thoroughly and allow the excess to drain away. Check the weight of the pot as well as the soil to help you judge when it needs a drink. During autumn and winter, growth can slow considerably, so reduce watering and allow it to dry out a little more between drinks.

Soil:

A chunky, well-draining houseplant mix is ideal. Adding perlite or other chunky material helps create plenty of air around the roots while still allowing the compost to hold some moisture. Good drainage is particularly important with Alocasias, as they are prone to problems if their roots stay too wet.

Temperature:

This is a tropical plant and likes to stay warm. Aim for around 18–24°C and keep it away from cold draughts and chilly windows. Try to keep temperatures above 16°C during the growing season, and don't be alarmed if growth slows or the plant loses some leaves over winter.

Feeding:

Feed every 2–3 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser, following the dilution instructions on the bottle. This is when your Alocasia will be putting its energy into producing those impressive new leaves. Reduce or stop feeding during the winter when growth slows.

A few last notes:

Alocasia Frydek Variegated can be a little dramatic when its conditions change, so try to keep its environment as consistent as possible. Using a cloche (think Beauty and the Beast!) can really help to keep its environment consistent if you have any worries.

The variegated leaves are particularly special because each one can have a slightly different pattern. New leaves may also emerge with more or less variegation than the previous one, which is part of the fun of growing one!

Alocasia Frydek Variegated is toxic to pets and can cause irritation if eaten, so keep it away from curious cats and dogs.
